In 1984 the group that is now known as the Hampton Theatre Company began life on a shoestring and a dream at the Westhampton Beach Elementary School with its first production, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK. The company has come a long way since its founding, by James Ewing, James Irving and June Ewing, when the company had no theater, no audience, no board of directors and no capital and performed in such dramatic venues as a tent pitched behind the Masonic Temple on Montauk Highway in the midst of an August hurricane.

In 1987, thanks to the generosity of the Village of Quogue, the company found a home at the lovely Quogue Community Hall. Over the intervening years, the company has presented more than 60 plays by a wide variety of major playwrights. Among the company’s best remembered productions are SYLVIA, THE FOREIGNER, NOISES OFF, THE REAL THING, THE DINING ROOM, A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE, RUMORS and PROOF.

In 2000, the Village of Quogue began an extensive renovation of the Community Hall and the HTC took to the road again, presenting plays at both the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center and at East Hampton’s Guild Hall. Happily, in the spring of 2004, the Hampton Theatre Company was able to return to Quogue and a beautiful new space where we plan to present many great shows in the years to come.
